Working Hard…What Do You Mean?
I’m subscribed to a Youtuber called CharliMarieTV who happens to own their own business.
She has a GirlBoss hashtag and she has a guest and they talk about what it’s like to have their own online store…or being your own boss.
I was struck in one part of the video, and I do hear this a lot, people say ‘you have to work hard’.
What exactly does that mean though to work hard. I’d like to explain what that means to me cause in my estimation there are two sides (negative and positive) to it.
Definition of Working Hard
Quora.com defines it this way that I really like:
” Working hard means exceeding expectations. If you’re expected to hand in a report per semester, but you instead hand in 5 stellar reports, that’s working hard. Working hard means persisting when others would’ve given up.”
With the examples that this definition provides, it definitely paints a picture in your head of what YOU have to do, applied to your own goals, to be considered a ‘hard worker’.
Positives & Negatives of Working Hard
Hard work does yield rewards eventually so that obviously us the main positive…just don’t miss out on ‘other’ things or time spent with family and friends so that you have a balance or ‘decompress’ time. Anything not done in moderation, has the potential of making our lives ‘unbalanced’. Like that saying: “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy.”
All work and no play will eventually create burn out. How can it not? So creating a time table, a schedule for your hard work is essential. Especially if you are your own boss and do not have the schedule of a day job. A schedule is important to keep your life in balance. Even if you love that ‘thing’ your working hard to do and achieve, taking a break is monumental to being able to continue to breath new life into it (especially a creative job) and sit down with a fresh pair of eyes every time you come back from a break doing something completely different.
I think there are some great tips in this video so I’ve included this below:
